The (CSA) officially announced the start of Digital Broadcasting on 20th June 2014

The (CSA), equivalent of OFCOM in France, officially announced the start of Digital Broadcasting in the cities of Paris, Marseille and Nice on 20th June 2014. This decision has been released in the Official Publication No. 0294, last 19th December.

 

The CSA decision answering to a non-stop increase of calls due to commercial and independent radio stations needs about digital coverage and technological advances related to the rollout of the RNT (French Digital Broadcasting) on national territory.

 

On its website, the CSA has commented its choice: “The start date is set at least six months in advance in accordance with the decision of authorizations issued in January 2013. This period will enable radio stations and multiplex operators to lead all necessary technical and commercial operations for the launch on the 20th of June.

 

 

In facts, nearly sixty programs in Paris and more than ninety radios split between Marseille and Nice, will be launched simultaneously in digital, June 20th. At the beginning, nearly 3 million people in total should be concerned in the cities of Marseille and Nice and up to 8 million in Paris. At least, digital radio should cover 4.5 million people on the French Riviera and 13 million in Paris area. At this occasion, six multiplex in Paris and twice time four multiplex for Marseille and Nice have been shaped in order to match with the CSA proposal. Quickly, others multiplex should be launched in these three cities.

 

Moreover the CSA is already considering the option of a short-term rollout of Digital Radio to others French major cities.
